At worst i see they will make some tweaks with an EOL firmware so that the consoles don't need to connect to any server to properly function. I don't see Sony shutting down a server required to make consoles usable. It's not like Ps3, Psvita and Psp stores that have tons of data. Well, i believe Sony will still keep a very low maintenance server just to keep Ps3 and Ps4 consoles working, a server like that doesn't really cost so much. Sorry, I must have missed this yesterday. I've skipped over PS3 but the short version is it also has this issue but it only affects digital games, physical ones play fine. The sample size of tested PS5 games is really small so we need further tests to determine what the situation is here. The PS5 will play disc based PS4 games when the internal clock isn't set (watch this get 'fixed' in a firmware update) but apparently has issues installing & playing some PS5 games. If that server is unavailable for any reason (such as: you don't have internet access, the server isn't available, the certificate on the console is no longer valid and so on) then the PS4 will not play any games, including disc based ones, regardless of whether you pop in a fresh battery or not. When the battery dies the system needs to talk to a Sony server on the PSN network to set this clock. Its time is kept current when there's no power by the CMOS battery and (I believe) the console has the time set at the factory before shipping. The issue here is that the PS4 (and likely the PS5 but it gets complicated at this point) has an internal clock which you and I cannot change. Click to shrink.Sorry, I must have missed this yesterday.
